At the end of April, I tripped on my driveway, over luggage I had pulled out of my camper, and hit my head pretty hard. While I was momentarily disoriented, and got a big bruise, we took X-rays, and there did not seem to be any continuing problems. Then at the end of June, I suddenly became disoriented, and began to have trouble finishing my sentences and walking in a straight line. My primary care provider thought it was likely that I was having a reaction to a medication I had recently started, but also recommended a bunch of tests just to make sure. I had blood tests, and a CAT scan. The date that the MRI was scheduled didn't work with an upcoming vacation, and we managed to get it moved up to the next day as long as we went downtown. I was not at all worried about this, because we were pretty sure we "knew" what the problem was.
Turns out that we were wrong, and for two months I had been slowly bleeding into my brain. The radiologists sent us to the Emergency Room. The neurologists were not able to work us into their schedule that day, but they found time at 9:30 PM the next day, to send me into surgery for 1 1/2 hours to stop the bleeding, and then I began the recovery process of letting my body reabsorb the blood. I'm still recovering my stamina but my brain seems to be working pretty well once again.
This is the song that came out of reflecting on all of this.
