Don't Let Me Stay the Same

This is a song I wrote a long time ago, sometime before 2006, but it seems not to have been added here.  It ran across my mind recently.   I had come across the prayer, "Break my heart with the things that break your heart, "  I think in its original context, this prayer may have been intended as a prayer about the sad things in the world, but it became for me a cry for personal transformation.

Don't let me stay the same

O Lord, break my heart
With the things that break Your heart.
When I grieve You
Let me grieve too.
Don't let me see my sin
And pretend it isn't there.
Teach me to be honest
And teach me to care

Don't let me stay the same,
Don't let me stay the same.
Don't let me hide in the dark
And play the same old games.
Let me see my sin and confess my shame
And run to You for healing
In Jesus' name.

Lord, help me run to You for healing
In Jesus' name.

Blessings--God as the Expander

From time to time I think about the various Islamic "Beautiful Names" of God, and I was thinking about the one which means "The Expander" which is linked to a verse in the Quran that talks about God blessing those who lend to God, which in the Bible is a term for giving to the poor.

The idea of God expanding us brought to mind the Prayer of Jabez, which is tucked away in 1 Chronicles 4:10, and which very few people noticed until Bruce Wilkinson brought it to our attention in a best selling book back in 2000.  "Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!  Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request."  (1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV)

In Proverbs 19:17, we read that "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done."

And Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." (Luke 6:38 NIV).  For what it's worth, let me point out that he was NOT talking about giving to the church.

So this is a song that came to me as I was doing some long-distance driving around the country.

Blessings

You are so marvelous,
You are so grand.
You give us your blessings and
Allow us to expand.

You bless us so much
That your gifts overflow
And allow those around us
To flourish and grow.

O God, may Your gifts
Freely flow from my hands
And help those around me to
Grow and expand.

Your mercy and love
May I never hold back
'Til your bountiful kindness
Has healed every lack.

The Favor of God

I have been thinking a lot about the Beatitudes, as our church has been studying the Sermon on the Mount, and I have the privilege of preaching the review and summary of that topic this Monday.

The Favor of God

Blessed are the poor in spirit
For the Kingdom of heaven is theirs
Blessed are the ones who are weeping in grief
God will wipe up their tears and give comfort and strength

The favor of God will rest upon you
When you are desperate, don't know what to do
With nowhere to turn, at the end of your rope--
Let God be the one who brings comfort and hope.

Blessed are the meek and the gentle
For they will inherit the land.
Blessed are the ones who long to be righteous
With their longing fulfilled, in the light they will stand.

The favor of God will rest upon you
When you hunger and thirst to be righteous and true
When you don't rail and clamor for all that you're due
Then the blessing of God will settle on you.

Blessed are the ones who show mercy
For they will have mercy shown them.
Blessed are the ones whose love for God is pure
They'll recognize God for certain and sure.

The favor of God will rest upon you
When your hands and your heart are both open to do
The things that are needed by all those around
Then the blessings of God will surely abound.

Blessed are the ones who reach out to make peace
They'll be known as God's children and grace will increase.
And blessed are those who for doing what's right
Are tormented and hated by those who hate light.

The favor of God will rest upon you
When you're persecuted for things that you do
As you follow Jesus with all that you are
In the Kingdom of God you will surely go far.

My Kingdom

Certainly many Christians over the years have become convinced that God wanted them to take up arms to fight "for Jesus".  But while Jesus was absolutely proclaiming a Kingdom, I do not see that either then or now He meant for that Kingdom to be established either by the force of arms or by passing laws to compel people to do His will.

My Kingdom

My Kingdom
Is not of this world
If it were, my followers
Would fight for me.
But as it is,
My Kingdom is not from here.

All authority in heaven and earth
Has been given to Jesus;
He is the King of Kings.

And He said,
My Kingdom
Is not of this world.
If it were, my followers
Would fight for me.
But as it is,
My Kingdom is not from here.

Jesus said that those who would be great
Must become the servants
His Kingdom is not like ours.

And He said
My Kingdom
Is not of this world.
If it were, my followers
Would fight for me.
But as it is,
My Kingdom is not from here.

Jesus said His Kingdom was inside
the hearts of His people.

It's righteousness, peace, and joy.

And He said
My Kingdom
Is not of this world
If it were my followers
Would fight for me
But as it is,
My Kingdom is not from here.

For any who wonder, "My Kingdom . .. ." is taken from what Jesus said to Pilate.  John 18:36.
"All authority in heaven and earth..." Matthew 28:18.
Those who would be great... Matthew 20:26; 23:11
Kingdom in God's people Luke 17:21
Righteousness peace and joy Romans 14:17

Sending

A while back I woke up singing the chorus of this song.

I guess part of this song is a response to my personal conviction that the United States is about to enter a pretty grim time, and that the Church is going to be required to step up and step out in ways that most of us haven't managed quite yet. My prayer is that I and the part of the church that I am involved with will be equipped to walk in a way that is worthy of the Master.

Sending

Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out
To be salt and light

You send us into the world as sheep
Knowing wolves will be there.
Help us to trust that we
Are under the Shepherd's care.
Help us be wise as snakes,
But gentle as doves.
Help us remember
We're serving a God who loves.

Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out.
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out.
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out
To be kings and priests.

Help us to share the truth
That gave us new birth
Praying Your Kingdom
Will fill the earth.
Helping the lame to walk
and the blind to see.
Sharing the Gospel truth
That sets people free.

Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out.
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out.
Sending, sending, sending
You are sending us out
To be children of God

Sending, sending, sending,
You are sending us out
To be daughters and sons of God.
